On March 5, 2007, al-Mutanabbi Street, Baghdad's bookselling and literary center was bombed in an act of terrorism. In an effort to not only memorialize the people lost, but restore the "memory and future" of ideas found within books, the Al-Mutanabbi Street Coalition will gather Boston-area writers, readers, booksellers, bookbinders, book
artists, printers, and poets for a celebration in honor of
Iraq's storied Al-Mutanabbi Street bookstores.
Back Pages Books is a
proud supporter of the Al-Mutanabbi Street Project, a forthcoming
collaboration of book artists worldwide in celebration of Baghdad's
once-vibrant intellectual-hub. Bookstore owner Alex Green will kick off
the event with a reading of a 2007 piece by the late New York
Times Journalist Anthony Shadid, whose work inspired the Al-Mutanabbi
Street Project.
